Strong role models are important when helping to shape a child’s social skills. However, practicing social skills is also a necessary step to help a child. It gives them hands on experience with such social skills as taking turns, self-regulation, and learning teamwork. It also offers them social perspective. Taking turns can be taught even to babies. Toddlers can play the name game. Older children might learn to rhyme by singing songs. Kids can graduate into role playing and later play charades.

- Social competence includes the ability to decipher emotions, cooperate, form friendships, and resolve conflicts.
- Role models can help social competence development, but so can practicing the skills.
- Learning to take turns, playing the name game, and rhyming with songs are a few ways to practice social competence.
