Teaching generosity to your children starts by ensuring that you are a generous person. Generosity is associated with better mental health and is linked to happiness. It is about giving your time and resources to others. Start to teach generosity by asking your children how giving makes them feel. This is linked to their concept of sharing. It is important, though, for them to realize that sharing involves letting others use their things by their own choice.

Key Takeaways:

  • In order to teach generosity to your children, you need to be a model for them by acting generously yourself.
  • Generosity isn't just giving money away, it also includes being helpful to others, sharing your time, and paying attention to the needs of others.
  • Research indicates that there is a biological basis for generosity, that it makes us feel good and has evolutionary survival benefits.

"True generosity means that I give of what is mine, by my own choice. And that is where the joy and the character building comes from. So first, I must understand what is mine and what is yours."
