#MOMday – Can Boys Play with Dolls?

A mom, who is an avid listener to Fresh Radio 95.3 in California, sent an email on their #MOMday asking for some helpful advice on a tough choice she has to make soon. Her 3-year-old son (whose birthday is coming up) wants to get a dollhouse for his birthday gift but her mother-in-law is adamantly against the idea. The mom asked other listeners for their thoughts to help shed some light on the matter and give her some perspective. A lot of people tweeted, emailed or called in their responses and voiced their opinions. Many agreed that it should be totally okay to get her son the dollhouse because 1.) she’s the mom and she should be able to make choices for her son’s well being and not the grandma, 2.) toys should be toys and labelling them as ‘for girls’ or ‘for boys’ just limits their opportunities for creative play, 3.) allowing your son to play with dolls will help develop them into nurturing and caring dads when they grow up, and 4.) being gay is not determined by the toys a child plays with, as evidenced by one gay man who grew up playing only with Legos and Hotwheels.
