Gender-Specific Toys: Daughters Should Be Playing With Lego, Not Dolls

UK Education minister Elizabeth Truss, speaking in a magazine interview, said that she doesn’t believe girls should be ‘pushed into fashion over farming’ and that parents should encourage and not force any interests on their child. She further says that parents should let their daughters play with gender-neutral toys like Lego to enhance their chances at fields such as engineering and other logical/mathematical areas when they eventually leave school. The debate over the gender segregation in toys has been going on for decades and doesn’t only cover discussions about function, but also colour and packaging. It has also cropped up once again when famous retailer Marks and Spencer announced its plan for “gender-neutral” packaging for all its toys. Truss and minister for women and equalities Jo Swinson are both advocates of the campaigners Let Toys Be Toys, a group that aims to address this issue by asking retailers and manufacturers to sort toys by theme or function as an alternative.
