Boys can play with dolls, too

Abi Bechtel used the power of social media to call the attention of retail giant Target regarding their gender-based signs on toys, and she definitely got their attention. While shopping at one of their stores on June 1, she noticed an aisle that differentiated between “building sets” and ‘girls’ building sets” and decided to snap a photo and tweet her thoughts on the matter. The post has since then gone viral with over 3000 retweets and favorites, and even more people agreeing with her and voicing their own complaints about such labels. Target released a statement on their website last Friday to announce the removal of gender-stereotyping on their home, entertainment, and toy products. The move has earned the store both praise from sectors who believe that the company is on the right track with tackling subtle gender constraints brought about by marketing, as well as criticism from those who want to defend the sacredness of gender and its position in society.
